New for 1999: The Mustang gets a complete makeover for the new year, featuring
more angular styling, a revised suspension and significant horsepower increases
in its V6 and V8 engines. A new optional traction control system enhances
vehicle control. History: The original Mustang, which debuted in 1964,
was not only one of the most successful new-car introductions in automotive
history, but it also created a market segment known as the "pony car,"
noteworthy for compact dimensions, a long-hood/short-deck profile and spirited
performance. As the years have passed, most of the Mustang's competitors
have disappeared or evolved to compete in other market segments. The Mustang
itself has undergone many changes in design and market focus over the years—today's
version marking a return to the car's performance and styling roots. Trim
Details: The 1999 Ford Mustang is available in six trims: Mustang (base),
GT and SVT Cobra, each as either a 2-door coupe or convertible. Safety
features include dual airbags, an optional traction control system and
an anti-lock brake system (ABS) standard on GT and Cobra trims only. Powering
the base Mustang is a 3.8-liter 190-horsepower V6 engine, while a 4.6-liter
260-horsepower V8 provides power for the GTs. The Cobra gets a more powerful
version of the 4.6-liter V8 that puts out 316 horsepower. Standard equipment
includes air conditioning, power windows and door locks, 35th Anniversary
fender badging, tinted glass, remote keyless entry, an AM/FM stereo cassette,
and 15-inch alloy wheels. The GT trims upgrade with a rear spoiler, dual
exhaust, fog lights, sport bucket seats, a limited-slip differential, front
and rear stabilizer bars, and 16-inch forged-aluminum wheels. The limited
edition Cobra adds leather sport bucket seats, SVT badging, a Mach 460
stereo system and 17-inch cast-aluminum wheels.
